Q1: Create one example of either a valid logical argument, or an invalid logical argument, and state which it is.
An argument is valid only when the conclusion follows the premises, and an argument is logical if it is valid and the premises is true.
Example of valid logical argument:
- Everyone in the classroom owns a Honda Civic
- Mark is in the classroom
- Therefore Mark owns a Honda Civic
Q2: Find an example of a logical fallacy online (e.g. memes, comments, videos, articles), and explain why it is fallacious.
An example of a logical fallacy would be Donald Trumps method of insulting opponents in arguments instead of focusing on the topic at hand. This is know as an “Ad hominem” fallacy. This can be seen at 0:35 in the video from the 2016 presidential election:
Here Trump claims Hilary has a bad temper, attacking her character instead of arguing the topic.
Q3: Give a good, brief argument for why Geomatics is the best discipline on Earth. (Silliness is welcome.)
Imagine you’ve just entered a world without Geomatics. Everything seems normal, until you decide to take your mountain bike for a ride. It’s a beautiful day and with a few kilometers of ground covered you’re feeling great. A fork in the road approaches but you’re unsure which way to go, and without thinking pull out your smartphone to get your bearings. Google Maps loads, but interestingly enough, nothing appears because there are no satellites. “No problem,” you think, “I’ll just use my old map”. Upon unfolding your map nothing but white space stares blankly back at you, as surveying is non-existent. So without any logical estimation you decide to take the left path. Just your luck, this path leads to a dead end. It’s getting dark at this point, and so you call it a day and trace back to your car. Frustrated and hungry you decide a pit-stop at the next restaurant on the way home could make up for the day. Along the road you look for the sign telling you which way goes into town, but every sign simply says “MAX 50” due to no place having a location. This world sucks.
Geomatics is the best discipline because without it we would be aimlessly walking around this world with no where to go, and no idea how to get there.
